Nebula

Nebula is now live

Nebula has been voted one of the top five styles in LiveJournal's second ever style contest, and is now available for use with your journal via the Customize Area. A big thank you to everyone who voted.

Now that Nebula is publically-available, I will no longer be accepting requests for help with this style, and comments to this entry are now screened - there are just too many of you out there. Please report any problems you're having with your LiveJournal to Support - not here, not in my journal. I will fix any bugs with Nebula as they crop up by way of support requests.

The official Nebula community (well, as official as you can get) can be found at [info]s2nebula. Here's an introduction to the community.

Once again, thanks for choosing Nebula!

Nebula
Here's a funky CSS-based design I put together. It features a rather nice sidebar design which can go on the left or right side of the page, and the tableless page structure even shows up fine (with the obligatory minor tweaks) in Windows Internet Exploder coughhackptooie.

The name is meant to represent the galaxy of customisation options available (boom boom): there's very little design structure hard-coded into the style, so those customisations that can't be made via the Customize pages can most likely be made instead by overriding the stylesheet. The basic design as shown in the preview links is pretty clean and uncluttered, but you can make it as messy pretty individual as you want.

Nifty little things include a strip-design mini-calendar, support for background images and the ubiquitous linklist and page summary features, as well as the option to use LiveJournal textured background images in up to three different content areas. You can mess with widths and margins to accommodate a background image: hell, I even found time to stick support for the new "AJAX" dynamic comment management system in there, but that's limited to deleting until I (or whoever takes over) can figure that one out.

So, on to the previews!

I love your strip mini-calendar - what a great idea! :D

The calendar placement is genius!

This is fabulous, and I join the other commenters in praise for the calendar placement. There is one small issue here, though: how about the calendar strip sharing the color-avidness of other elements?

Anyway, I'll vote for it :)

Time constraints forced me to hard-code the MiniCal colours, and I didn't want to make any changes to the style code once the submission deadline had passed in order to avoid gaining an unfair advantage. If my style wins the contest, this'll be one of the things I'll fix first, as I do believe the MiniCal colours should be as customisable as the rest of them.

Thanks for your vote!

You're very welcome, and of course I don't mind. Don't forget to vote for your favourites in the contest!

I would prefer the main entry part to be wider as default, but I assume that's easily changed. The strip calendar's a novel thing, and it's always good to see what S2 can do. One thing though: When you go to post a comment, the form is too wide for the content strip thingy with its current size. I'd also prefer some form of divider or more space between the post comment and read comment links. This is mostly personal preference though. I'm too lazy to play with all of the styles, so I'll just assume that you can change all of this ;)

Certainly.

The width of the content area is currently calculated by subtracting the sidebar width percentage from the main page width percentage. Both the sidebar and content areas have margins of their own, so that contributes to the gap; the margins can be overridden in the CSS, though. I experimented adding a few percentage points to the content width, but anything I tried pushed the sidebar beneath the content in certain browsers. One option for the future would be to let people choose between an automatic and custom width for the content area.

The talklinks are contained within the entryFooter div, so those <a> tags can be customised to your heart's content via the CSS. The default keeps it simple.

As for the reply form, time didn't permit me to investigate restricting the width of the form, so I can only apologise for that. I obviously don't want to mess with the layout code in the middle of the voting process, however, so any changes will be made once the votes are in and the winners are announced.

Why does your screenshot show the style, only opposite? o.o

[info]jc

April 23 2005, 02:47:12 UTC 7 years ago

The sidebar can go on either the left or the right of the main content. The theme shown in the screenshot demonstrates the right-hand sidebar, whereas the other ones only mess with the colours.

I really like this style. I came across them after the winners were announced so I can't vote... but my question is, if I was to use it, is that OK? And then I'd need to figure out how to set it up...

April 24 2005, 17:01:40 UTC 7 years ago

I have no objections to you using it now, but if you wait a few weeks you'll be able to choose a slightly improved version from the Customize area. (Nebula made the top 5!)

[info]dozerbull

April 24 2005, 17:58:51 UTC 7 years ago

Wow, I like yours the best and wish it was 1st place. I am not sure of the ettiquette. are we allowed ot use your design if giving credit? and if so how? I've done some s2 modifications, and I see here to cut and paste the code, but it doesn't make my lj style look like this ....help...

[info]jc

April 24 2005, 20:22:19 UTC 7 years ago

No credit (or whishing) needed: Nebula made the top 5 as voted by the LiveJournal community, so a slightly improved version will become one of the system defaults in the next few weeks.

If you can't wait, check out FAQ 177 for instructions on how to use Nebula's layout layer now: you can skip most of it and head to the last three paragraphs, because when choosing a Layout layer you can select "Other..." and input Nebula's layerid, which is 3987767. To get the style to look exactly as it did in the screenshot, select "Other..." as your theme and use the layerid 4014749.

If you're still having problems, the nice people in support can assist.

haha. i find it interesting that you morons thinks "latin" is so weird and ridiculous, or "freaky" and "hilarious" to be exact.

it's dummy text. christ.

anyways, saw all this stuff *after* the contest, but just wanted to say congratulations, like the layout, just wish it didn't have that weird camo background :D

[info]jc

April 24 2005, 21:07:29 UTC 7 years ago

just wish it didn't have that weird camo background :D

That's perfectly customisable. You can choose from any one of LiveJournal's supplied textures, a solid colour or your own background image, and/or work on top of one of the themes listed.

April 25 2005, 02:26:13 UTC 7 years ago

Can I move the navbar to the right side?

And can I get rid of the weird gradients at the tops of the boxes?

[info]jc

April 25 2005, 02:45:32 UTC 7 years ago

If you go to Edit Individual Customizations in the Customize area, you can choose which side the sidebar shows up on.

The "weird gradients" are currently not optional, but that'll change between now and the time Nebula's added as a system style.

I was looking through the top 5 results, and I must say I was more or less underwhelmed. They were okay, but nothing that was revolutionary or impressive enough to make me consider using any of them.

And then I saw yours. Yours is fantastic-looking, easy to use, clever, clear to navigate, and very original. I'm tremendously impressed. I'll be using yours as soon as it becomes a system default.

Thanks for working so hard on this.

April 26 2005, 00:58:53 UTC 7 years ago

First of all, I love this layout!! But I do have a question: Is it possible for a background image to be placed?

[info]jc

April 26 2005, 09:35:23 UTC 7 years ago

Placed, positioned, you name it. If you choose to use your own background image, it takes the place of any texture (i.e. the camouflage you see in the screenshot) that you've chosen to use for the page background.
