Transmogrified - LiveJournal 2nd Ever Style Contest

About Transmogrified

Previous Entry Transmogrified Apr. 12th, 2005 @ 02:57 am Next Entry
This is a CSS based layout. There are lots of options to fiddle around with in the wizard, which is both good and bad because it is kind of overwhelming. The components in the sidebar can be added, removed, and reordered as needed. One of the more interesting things about this layout is the sidebar. There is an option to remove the sidebar in the individual entry page. Also, I put in the option to remove the sidebar from specific friends groups, which is useful for communities that post a lot of huge graphics without a cut (the sidebar just cuts into everything). What's not customizable are the little icons that are next to the entry metadata.

Features:
- there are lots of options to customize using the wizard (fonts, colours, text, userpics, etc.)
- components in the sidebar can be shuffled around or disabled
- users can add their own custom css styles in the theme layer
- users can add to the sidebar in the theme layer
- there are alternating entry/comment colours
- users can input their friends groups name and have them displayed on the sidebar
- users can disable the sidebar

What I need to do:
- add ability to change the metadata icons
- incorporate the custom background and foreground colours for each person on the friends list
See this post for more information.

Note: This was posted at like the last possible moment, I haven't finished all the theme colors yet, I'm sorry!! I hope I can edit this later. Updated.

I'm new to the whole S2 thing, and to twiddling with my LJ on my own. What layout are you using? I'm assuming it's a custom layout, since that's the point of the contest, but I don't know what number I should be putting for the layout - I only see the numbers for the themes. Er?

The ID number for this layout is 4014482. If you want to use the layout, go to your styles page, create a new style, then choose the "other ..." option in the "layout" dropdown box. In the layerid box, put in 4014482, and press the "change" button. Then go back to your styles page, and press the "use" button next to the style you just created.

Okay, so I know it's too late for the contest, but would you accept a patch to add support for setting the userpic location? I'm so used to having mine on the right, it's just not natural otherwise :)

Sure! I might just change it to have the userpic on the right for the default, because the style looks kinda funny when an entry doesn't have a userpic attached to it - there's a huge gap on the left. :)

However none of your themes really struck my fancy, so I "borrowed" your code, and started playing with the Topography theme, and while I'm not done, it's looking more like my old journal, new theme... ^__^;;

I'm glad you like it. I just updated the code, and added in some new stuff / fixed some bugs, so feel free to grab the new stuff.

It would be perfect if it had a link to previous entries at the bottom of the page. I hate having to go back to the top to click on the next 20 previous entries when I'm reading a pile of friends' journals.

The style does have a link to previous entries at the bottom. My recent entries page doesn't have that though, because there are less than 20 public entries. But if there were more than 20, the link would be there. (I hate having to scroll back up too) You should be able to see it on the friends page.

I really like this style, except I'm noticing a bit of a bug. Hmm, having tested it in Firefox as well as Opera, I'm thinking that perhaps it's intentional, or maybe just overlooked everywhere. In both the mini calendar and the main calendar, the days with entries are out of line with the empty days. That's the only thing that would bug me about this style (along with maybe the date being lowered a bit, especially since the userpics are now on the right).

I need to go through and save all of the styles that I like, in case they don't win and are taken down! I'm completely hopeless with S2, so it will be really nice to have the option to use many nice styles in the future.

Ahhh... I noticed that thing with the calendar, but I forgot to fix it, so you're right, that was a bug. I fixed it now.

I'm not sure what you mean by the date being lowered though.

When you post an image that is somewhat large, it busts out of the entry box and looks kinda ugly. The other styles seem to expand when that is the case. Dunno if that's easy to fix or not :-S.

Here's what I mean.

Either way, got my vote, and I'm using it whether or not it wins :-).

It's fixable, I think. I got it so that if there is a large image or whatever, there will be a scrollbox so it won't overlap onto the sidebar. I haven't updated the code though, because I'm not sure if I'm allowed to change anything while there's a contest going on. :) In the meantime, I think the best thing for you to do is to go to the Customize Journal, hit the "Edit Customizations" button, and where it says "Page width, as a percentage" set the number to 90. That'll make the entire layout wider.

Anway, just a quick question: is there any way I can use the old read/comment comment format with this style?

Yep. Go to the Customize Journal page, and click on the "Edit Customizations" button. Click on the "Text" tab, and then scroll down to where it says "Link text to leave a comment" and "Link text to read comments".

Other Box

(Link)
This may seem daft, but I can't seem to find where I put in the test etc for the "Other Box"

I have gone through the customization page, I can rename it etc, but can't find anywhere to type in what I want to put in their.

Probably overlooking something

By the way the style is awesome, I voted for it :)

Re: Other Box

(Link)
You're not overlooking anything. There isn't any text box available in the customization wizard. That was supposed to be overridden in a theme layer, like when you add additional components in the Component style. I forgot that I could add it to the customization wizard!

You could create a theme layer for the style though, and then paste the following in the layer:

function Page::lay_print_other()
{
"""
Put whatever you want here
""";
}

Then you replace the stuff in bold to whatever text you want.

I really love this theme. But I do have a question -- you can remove all the boxes from the sidebar on the recent page, but I don't seem to be able to reclaim the space. Is there a way to do this?

There is another option you have to change to remove the sidebar completely - but that's only for the friends page right now. I'll have to add another option to remove the sidebar from the recent page, too.

I found this community through a member of another community I'm in...

I love, love, love this style! If I had the time to figure out the whole S2 system and create styles, this is just about exactly what I would want. I've been using the same style since I got a paid account (component), and this is perfect!!

Thanks for your hard work!

All right, I know the contest has been over for a while, but I have to ask because it's driving me bonkers:

What does "transmogrified" mean?
[User Picture Icon]
From:absolut

(Link)
The word transmogrify means "To change into a different shape or form, especially one that is fantastic or bizarre". I got the word from a comic strip, Calvin and Hobbes. My thinking was that every single page is written in some ugly looking HTML. But with this style, you can make it look pretty on the screen, and, with all the options, you can transform it into any look you want. :)

The best place to start with learning about styles is to read the FAQ. Since you have a free account I think using the S1 style is easier to customize (you can't use my style by the way, because you need a paid account). The community howto has a lot of useful tutorials, and there are lots more communities that discuss styles (override_helper, ljdesigners, etc). I hope that helps you a bit!
